Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2018
April is national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)! Check out these community awareness events happening in April as part of SAAM
- APRIL 12th - PS Coast Services Director, Lia Holbrook, will be interviewed on the Rural Resiliency Program on KZYX at 9 am.
- APRIL 13 & 15 - JANE DOE IN WONDERLAND
Game Over and the Community Against Human Trafficking of Mendocino County will be presenting two free performances of Jane Doe in Wonderland. <--- Link has info on where you can reserve free tickets, dates, times and locations.
Jane Doe in Wonderland unites survivors, professional theatre artists, and communities in the effort to prevent sex trafficking through art and education. Appropriate for ages 14+, this original play and talkback draws parallels between Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the world of domestic sex trafficking; it exposes common ‘red flags’ of traffickers and combats social stigma towards victims by addressing the question “why don’t they run?”
Jane Doe in Wonderland will be presented in Ukiah on April 13th at Mendocino College, and on April 15th at Willits High School.
- APRIL 13 - TIM FLANNERY AT SHANACHIE PUB
SF Giants baseball legend Tim Flannery is also a very fine singer/songwriter and he'll be doing a live show at Shanachie Pub in Willits on April 13th in support of Project Sanctuary. - APRIL 25TH - DENIM DAY
April 25th is "Denim Day"! The campaign was originally triggered by an Italian Supreme Court ruling where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. In this rape prevention education campaign we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.
Throughout April we will be doing some stand alone school based Denim Day events . We'll be at Anderson Valley High School on April 10th, The Arbor in Ukiah on April 14th and Ukiah High School on April 19th and 20th. On the coast we will be doing Denim Day events from the 18th - 20th at Fort Bragg Middle School with an open house for parents on the 21st.
In addition to Denim Day, we'll be doing consent presentations at Mendocino High on April 19th and Alternative Education schools in Fort Bragg throughtout April.
